Ants can really be a pain! They are the ultimate unwanted houseguests. Once they enter your home they
will not go away willingly. In fact, they’ll invite their family to join them. They do this by leaving a phenome
trail that can be followed by the entire colony of workers. When one finds a way in, others will come!
In case you didn’t know, ants love sugar and grease. (In that regard they’re kind of like junk-food junkies!)
That’s why they’re attracted to kitchens. They also like food storage and dining areas.
The most effective way to ward off an invasion is to keep your kitchen, pantry, and dining room clean.
Food on your counter or under your table is their invitation to come inside. Pick up crumbs, sweep, and
mop on a regular basis. Wipe surfaces with solution made with mild bleach or vinegar.
Store food in airtight containers, even if it’s placed in a cabinet or on the top shelf of your pantry. If ants
can smell it, they will search until they find it.
When ants invade you’ll need to decide if you want to battle them on your own, or if you prefer calling a
professional. Both options offer advantages.
Handling them yourself is initially less expensive. If you choose this route, you might try these DIY quick-
fixes:
Spray a mix of salt and water on the counter along the ant trail. They’ll become thirsty and eventually
dehydrate. This will discourage them from returning for a while. Or…
Mix borax with sweetener, then spray in places scout ants have been seen. The sweetener attracts more
ants and the borax poisons them. Since ants eat their dead, the poison is passed on to others that follow.
These are temporary solutions. To ensure ants don’t return you must eliminate their nest. Professionals
are equipped to do just that. Thanks to the eating habits of ants, baiting is a good way to prevent a
second infestation in your home or business. Professionals use specially formulated bait that’s effective in
taking out colonies.
