We’re beginning to feel the first “not so hot” breezes of late summer, which means Fall will soon be upon us! Just about everyone will be outdoors, reveling in the crisp temperatures and glorious colors autumn is noted for. Very often our furry companions will be alongside.
As you’re enjoying all the season has to offer, it’s important to be aware that unwanted guests, notably fleas and ticks, are eager to join you. As we’ve discussed before, these pesky intruders are expert hitchhikers. However, you have ways to counter them. This month, let’s take a look at some ways you thwart their plans and ensure your pets have a pest-free season.
Shield Your Pets with Flea and Tick Protection –
Imagine a great day outdoors with your pet. You’ve had a wonderful time together, but return home to find fleas and ticks hopped aboard sometime during your outing. But it didn’t have to happen that way. This is where your first line of defense…flea and tick repellent…comes in. These medications provide a barrier that discourages various nuisances from climbing onto your furry friend in the first place. A number of options are now available. We recommend checking with your veterinarian or other pet care expert to select the best option for you.
Read and Understand Labels –
Do some research before selecting a product for use. This includes reading labels! They are guides to your pet’s safety. Different pets need different treatments, and using the wrong one can have serious consequences.
Apply Appropriately –
Next, let’s talk about proper application. It may help to think of treatment as a care day for your pet (without the cucumbers!) Gently part their fur at the neck, and apply treatment directly to their skin. Then hold them still for a moment. The solution will work its way through, creating an invisible shield guarding against fleas and ticks.
Let it Settle –
Once applied, give your pets a little time alone so the solution can dry. This will keep other pets from licking it off, and provide an opportunity for the substance to take full effect. Don’t skimp in this area: time away from other animals is essential.
Respond Quickly when Pests Are Found –
Should you find any of these freeloaders on your animals, take action immediately! A flea comb will work wonders in finding these little critters in your pet’s fur. Dip your comb into a container of soapy water and rake through their hair, wash the little critters into the water as you find them. Make sure to go over their entire body, and be sure to follow up with a flea bath.
Ideally, you would have discovered the problem before your pet was allowed inside, but if not, thoroughly clean your house to remove any that may have jumped into your carpet or onto furniture.
Strengthen Your Defenses –
Once your pets are clean and protected, it’s time to turn your attention outside. Fleas and ticks love hiding in overgrown grass and shrubs. In the short term, keep your lawn cut and decorative plants trimmed. Thinking longer term, consider planting shrubs to create a no-fly zone around your home.
Keep Strays Away –
Who hasn’t seen a cute feral animal wandering around the neighborhood? They can be adorable. Although they might seem charming, homeless animals often carry pests that are more than happy to relocate to your yard. Discourage strays by making sure refuse, especially food scraps, are secure in covered garbage receptacles.
